first of all, i want to thank the jewish museum of florida for hosting this venue, and for inviting me. i'm here today to talk about an unsolved mystery that hovered over america for over 60 years. that is, whatever became of the passengers who sailed on the 1939 ill fated voyage of the st. louis? late may, early june, 1939, really the unthinkable happened. the ship carrying over 900 jewish refugees fleeing nazi germany, just six months after crystalnacht, were denied entry in havana and then denied entry into the united states, after sailing very close to the shores of miami beach. so tantalizingly close that the passengers could see the palm trees and the hotels, and it's always very meaningful for me to speak about this event right here, in miami beach, where my understanding is that it was actually very close to south beach. so it's very close to where we are right now, the scene of the crime. so to speak. we at the holocaust museum had some unfinished business with this story. we wanted to know what became of the passengers, one by one by one. for us the saga of the st. louis was
